RE: Possible Union Strike
Dear Shareholders/Residents:
As you were previously advised, there exists a possibility that the employees of Local 32B/J will go on strike at midnight, Sunday evening, April 20, 2014.
At this time we would like to inform you how a strike will affect daily life at 30 Fifth Avenue.
SECURITY
If a strike occurs, the only access to the building will be through the front door. The side doors and the basement entrance will be locked and secured; no entry will be permitted. All move-ins/move-outs will be postponed until the strike has ended. Newspapers and other deliveries will be accepted at the front door only and residents must come down to receive them. Security Guards will be on duty 24 hours each day. The guards will be instructed to admit only those individuals who have an identity pass. REMEMBER TO CARRY YOUR IDENTITY PASS AT ALL TIMES. THE SECURITY GUARD WILL NOT RECOGNIZE BUILDING RESIDENTS AND WILL STOP ANYONE WHO DOES NOT HAVE AN IDENTITY PASS. THIS IS FOR EVERYONE’S PROTECTION!
We are asking Shareholders to volunteer to monitor the door in two hour shifts, from 9:00 A.M. – 9:00 P.M. This responsibility is given to residents, as security guards do not know the residents. In addition, shareholder will need to sort the second/third class mail that is normally distributed by the doormen. A sign-up chart will be posted near the front door for residents to choose times to help out. We urge each of you to signup as soon as possible for as many hours as you can give.
We urge shareholders/residents to take extra security precautions in their own apartments. Be sure to keep your doors locked at all times and to open them only for people you know. You will need to come downstairs to meet your guests in the lobby. The guard is not permitted accept packages or deliveries. Do not leave apartment keys or valuables with the guards for any reason.
Please refrain from having parties or gatherings during the duration of the strike.
In the event that you normally have domestics/caregivers, please obtain an identity passes for these employees. If your employees normally obtained keys from the doormen, you must make alternate arrangements.
EMERGENCIES
If there is an emergency in the building, contact Peter Romvari. If you are unable to reach Peter, call our office at (212) 223-0550 (9:00 A.M. – 5:00 P.M). At other times, please contact (212)-330-0422. Please limit your calls only to emergency situations.
LAUNDRY ROOM
Kindly keep your use of the laundry facilities to a minimum during the possible strike. Please be aware of the importance of proper use of the machines and of cleaning them after each use. It may be difficult to get service if breakdowns occur during a strike.
SUPERINTENDENT
Peter Romvari, the Superintendent, will not be on strike. This does not mean, however, that Peter will perform the work of the striking employees. Mr. Romvari will serve primarily in a security capacity, maintaining surveillance in the building and performing work only in the event of an emergency. Please do not ask him to perform porter or doorman work during the strike.
MOVE INS/MOVE OUTS/DELIVERIES
Please note that all move ins or outs, deliveries, esc will be suspended if the strike does take place.
CONSTRUCTION
All contractor work, both inside the building or within individual apartments will be suspended.
REFUSE DISPOSAL
During the strike, there will be garbage bags placed near the service elevator on each floor. Please fill these bags. They will be picked up by volunteers from each floor who will remove them from the building. Please store recyclable items such as newspapers and bottle inside your apartment until the building staff returns to their duties. Please note that there will be a sign-up sheet for volunteers in the lobby in the days immediately before the strike.
Sanitation workers may refuse to cross a picket line to collect garbage until ordered to do so by the health inspector. This means that garbage may sit outside the building for several days.
CLEANING OF HALLS AND PUBLIC AREAS
During a strike, residents will be asked to keep the hallways on their floors in good order.
DEVELOPMENTS
The Board will keep you informed of developments by posting notices.
Finally, in the event that there is a strike, it is cooperation between all of the parties involved that will allow 30 Fifth Avenue to continue to operate efficiently. While the situation is unpleasant for all, including the striking employees, please keep in mind that the situation is only temporary. We thank you in advance for your patience and courtesy.
Very truly yours,
Lisa Jensen
President
